Soften Mochi

Mochi is made from glutinous rice.

Mochi is a traditional food from Japan made out of glutinous rice that has been pounded and shaped into blocks or round cakes. When you purchase mochi, it is dried, hard and requires cooking in order to soften and prepare it for eating. You can serve mochi as a savory or sweet snack. Mochi can be pan-fried, steamed, boiled or simmered, but a quick, oven-bake method is an easy technique for creating puffy, golden mochi pieces. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Preheat your oven to 450°F.

2. Place the mochi pieces onto your baking sheet, leaving room between each. The mochi will expand dramatically so make sure your mochi are not touching.

3. Place the sheet of mochi into the oven and bake for five to 10 minutes or until the mochi are puffed and golden.

4. Remove the mochi from the oven and allow to cool slightly. Serve your mochi pieces with soy sauce, red bean paste or your favorite spread.
