Kids Crafts With Grass Seed

Use corn, along with white, black and green seeds for grass-seed projects.

Grass seeds works well for different types of kids crafts because they are similar in appearance and texture to bird seed. You can find grass seeds at a plant nursery or home-improvement store. The color of the seeds is generally brown or cream. Use other materials and types of seeds to make your craft complete. Combining grass seeds with beans, pumpkin or bird seed creates a spectrum of texture in paper crafts. Does this Spark an idea?

Glitter Grass-Seed Pine Cones

Find large pine cones in your area or buy them at a craft store. Help your kids spray the pine cones with clear spray-on glue and then sprinkle colorful glitter all over the pine cones. Allow the glitter to dry and then spray another coat of glue on the cones. Sprinkle grass seed, bird seed and other types of seeds on the pine cones and allow them to dry for 20 minutes. Once the pine cones are dry, tie a 7-inch piece of yarn on the top of each cone and hang it in your home or classroom. This is a simple craft for kids of all ages.

Grass-Seed Project

Help kids learn about different types of grasses. Have them plant three or more species of grass, such as Kentucky blue grass, desert grass and Bermuda grass in small pots. Each child should have his own collection of grass. Save extra seeds and keep these labeled so that you don't accidentally mix up the seeds. Make sure that you have enough seeds for the kids to use later on. Allow the grass to grow, and tailor your lesson plans around these types of grass and where they grow.

When the grass is 3 inches tall or higher give each child a 12-by-12 sheet of blue poster board and markers. Ask the kids to pluck the grass and glue chunks of grass on the paper. Help them label each type of grass and then show them glue the grass seed that matches the grown grass directly underneath each sample. Ask the kids to write down each type of grass at the top.

Grass-Seed Flowers

Buy green and yellow food coloring and show the kids soak the grass seeds so that they change color. Help the kids add 12 drops of yellow food coloring to a cup of water. Then add 12 drops of green food coloring to another cup of water. Add more drops if you want deeper colors. The kids simply place 1/2 cup of grass seed into each cup of colored water. The seeds need to soak for at least five minutes to absorb the colors.

Then help the kids strain the seeds in the sink. Take your time and place newspaper down on your work surface, because this project can get messy. Place the colored grass seeds on a plastic sheet of paper and allow them to dry for 20 minutes before moving to the next step. Give each child a 12-by-12 piece of card stock or poster board paper. Also give them markers so that they can draw the outline of a flower with a thick stem. Then help the kids glue the yellow grass seeds on the petals and the green grass seeds on the stems. Save some plain brown grass seeds for the middle of the flower. Hang the creations on a wall.
